NHL Future Watch: Filip Gustavsson Hockey Cards, Ottawa Senators – Filip Gustavsson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the 55th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. This goalie had a pedigree, and the hope was he would be able to play in the NHL in the next 4-5 years. Goalies can take longer than other positions to fully develop.
This talented Swede played for Skelleftea AIK, joining their 16-year-old team through their 20-year-old squad, but he didn’t play a lot there.
In 2015-16, Gustavsson finally played 20 regular season games and one playoff game for another team, Lulea HF. During that time, the netminder had a chance to play in the SHL for six games. Playing in the top league for a short time can really spark development.
In 2016-17, Gustavsson played 16 more games for the SHL team. During that season he represented Sweden in the U20 World Junior Championship for one game.
In 2017-18, Gustavsson was on loan still playing for Lulea HF in the SHL. He played 22 games posting a .918 save percentage against men. During that season, he returned to the World Junior Championship, and he walked away with the best goalie in the tournament and a silver medal. His numbers in the tournament against players his own age was stellar; 1.81 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in six games. Towards the end of the season, he was traded in a three-team deal to the Ottawa Senators. He signed with Ottawa and played in seven games for the Belleville Senators.
Ottawa signed Matt Murray, a veteran to allow Gustavsson the time to develop. From 2018-2021, he played in the ECHL, AHL, and NHL, anywhere he could get starting goalie’s ice time. This isn’t uncommon.
In 2021-22, Gustavsson played 18 games in the NHL and 20 in the AHL. The Senators aren’t great, and he was ok. With all that said, as the franchise improves so will his numbers. At 23, he has the talent, and it could take another year for him to start looking like a top goalie.
Cards Worth Chasing
The best card of Gustavsson’s to collect is his 2021-22 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Young Guns Rookie Card. The card shows him in his black sweater getting ready to make another athletic save.
Another cool card is his 2021-22 Upper Deck Series 1 Young Guns Black Canvas card. This great card shows him coming out of the tunnel.
One last card is his 2021-22 O-Pee-Chee Marquee Rookie Card. This card really shows off his cool red goalie pads.
