Product Rewind: 2013 Topps Finest Baseball – The release of 2013 Topps Finest Baseball marked the 20th Anniversary of the product’s initial release in 1993. Helping to usher in an era of manufactured scarcity, the Finest Refractors from that initial release still carry decent value on the secondary market to this day.

The 2013 version of the product pays homage to that classic set in several ways with the inclusion of several 1993 themed inserts. Among these are:

  • 1993 Topps Finest Insert which recreates the iconic 1993 Topps Finest design using current MLB players and includes refractors #’d to 25.
  • 1993 Topps Finest All-Stars featuring current MLB All-Stars in the 1993 Jumbo design. Refractors #’d to 10 and 5 are also showcased with the version numbered to five also being autographed.
  • Autographed Buybacks are refractor cards of the top players from 1993 and are #’d to 5.

There are several other aspects to this product that make it appealing. One of them is the existence of Hot Boxes. Each of the cards contained in a Hot Box are Refractor Parallels of the 1993 Finest design.

2013 Topps Finest Baseball also included a special Rookie Redemption program. These cards were redeemable for a Rookie Autographed card, numbered to 100, and were announced during the season. The three players included in the 2013 Topps Finest Rookie Redemption program were:

  •  #1 – Wil Myers
  • #2 – Shelby Miller
  • #3 – Evan Gattis

One of the big draws to the product was the use of ON-CARD Autographs for the Rookie Autograph cards that were GUARANTEED at the rate of one (1) per master box.  In contrast, the Autographed Jumbo Rookie Relic cards incorporated sticker autographs with over-size swatches and patches. These also hit at the rate of one (1) per master box.

Both of the above “box hits” can also be found in several tiers of parallels:

  • X-Fractor #’d to 149
  • Green Refractor #’d to 125
  • Orange Refractor #’d to 99
  • Gold Refractor #’dd to 50
  • Red Refractor #’d to 25
  • Atomic Refractor #’d to 5
  • SuperFractor 1/1
  • Printing Plates 1/1

That year’s extensive rookie crop means the chance to hit on some great cards! The parallels provide an excellent chase, as well, and the cards still deliver value as recent sales on eBay can attest.
