Breaking Barriers: Women of the Diamond, Kelsie WhitmoreBreaking Barriers: Women of the Diamond, Kelsie Whitmore – Being a baseball player has been Kelsie Whitmore’s goal since she was a child, and over and over again, she has proven that she belongs on the diamond.

As a child Whitmore played Little League and PONY baseball, often as the only girl on the field. As a teen she was a member of the Temecula Valley High School baseball team in Temecula, CA. She played softball at Cal State and also trained with their baseball team. She batted .395 with a .507 on-base percentage and a .824 slugging percentage in 2021, which led to being named the Big West Conference softball player of the year.

While Whitmore was in high school, she was also a member of the US Women’s National Baseball team. In addition to winning medals in several international competitions, from 2014 to 2019, Whitmore had a 1.35 ERA as a pitcher for the team.

In 2016, Stacy Piagno and Whitmore made history when they were signed as the first female teammates on a professional baseball team since the 1950s. The Sonoma Stompers, a team in the independent Pacific Association, signed the two women. Whitmore would return for a second season.

Whitmore pitched for the Portland Pickles of the West Coast League, a collegiate summer baseball league in 2021. In one game she pitched 5 innings and did not allow a run.

Most recently, Whitmore has once again pushed to the front page of the baseball world. On April 22, she debuted in the Atlantic League as a pinch runner. On May 1st, she became the first woman to start in an Atlantic League game when she took to the diamond as the Staten Island FerryHawks left fielder. She returned to the field on May 4th, entering the game as a pitcher. She retired a former major leaguer to end the inning.

Whitmore’s cards will be worth picking up when you come across them. She is already a history maker, and there is no telling where her career might lead.
