Future Watch: Alexander Volkov Rookie Hockey Cards, Lightning – Alexander Volkov was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 48th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. The 6-1 Russian started his career in Russia eventually came over to North America. There’s a difference in the size of the rinks and the way hockey is played here, so there has been a learning curve for him.
This talented winger did very well in the MHL playing for SKA, one of the most successful franchises in Russian hockey. In 128 games there he scored 35 goals adding 26 helpers for 61 points in total. As an all-around player, he was a +12 and he had his fair share of penalty minutes, he’s not afraid to play the game hard.
Volkov has twice represented Russian in international tournaments. Those teams are hard to get a roster spot on based on the amount of talent they produce every year.
In 2017-18, he decided to move to Syracuse and play for the Crunch in the AHL. He was now a pro playing for a franchise with a ton of good hockey players including two talented Russians in winger Nikita Kucherov and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. He had a solid rookie campaign scoring 23 goals and getting 45 points in 75 games plus three goals and three assists in six playoff games.
In 2018-19, with no jobs available in Tampa, he scored 23 goals once again and had 48 points in 74 games. He got a goal in four playoff games as well.
Collectors can find Alexander Volkov’s 2019-20 Young Guns Rookie Card in Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey. He has Canvas and Portraits cards in the set, as well. He also has cards in 2019-20 Upper Deck MVP Hockey.
Here’s a look at Volkov in action:
In 2019-20, before the pause, he was called up on three different occasions. His AHL numbers were trending up with nine goals and 21 assists in 46 games. At 22, he’s could be a regular next season on a Stanley Cup contending team.
