Future Watch: Alfredo Rodriguez Rookie Baseball Cards, Reds – Alfredo Rodriguez was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 2016 as a Cuban free agent. He was coming off a season in Cuba where he was the Serie Nacional Rookie of the Year. He won a gold glove award for his stellar play at shortstop, in that same league, in his only season there. He’s a big-time prospect.
After he was signed he reported to the DSL Reds in Rookie Ball. In 22 games he had eight RBI, five doubles, nine steals and a .234 average.
This past season he played for the Daytona Fortugas in the Florida State League. That’s high-A ball. He had two homers, 36 RBI, 19 doubles, 20 steals and a .250 average. Besides providing stellar defense he checks off an awful lot of boxes for the Reds.
Collectors can get his 2017 Bowman Chrome autographed rookie card.
According to his MLB.com draft profile:
There is no question that Rodriguez is a glove-first shortstop. His plus speed helps him have outstanding range, and he has a strong and accurate arm from anywhere on the field, leaving no doubt he will play the premium position for a long time to come. While there is consensus about his defensive abilities, the jury is split about his offensive potential. His speed should be an asset on the bases, and obviously the Reds think he is going to hit, while some evaluators outside the organization aren’t so sure. ETA 2019.
Here’s a look at him in action while in the Cuban league:
