Future Watch: Alphonso Davies Rookie Soccer Cards, Bayern Munich – One of the brightest young prospects in the history of MLS is now an 18-year-old playing for one of the most storied clubs in world football.
Winger Alphonso Davies plys his trade in the German Bundesliga for giant Bayern Munich. He is smooth on the ball, attacks plays one-on-one with ease and urgency and has no problem digging in an doing some dirty defensive work when needed.
Davies has flashy skill but not for flash’s sake. He loves his left foot but is more than capable with the right as well. Davies is tall, fast and quick with outstanding balance that he uses with success, often unbalancing defenders trying to stop his piercing runs into the penalty area.
The young Canadian joined the MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps‘ residency program in 2015 when he was just 15-years-old. He really broke through for the ‘Caps in MLS action in his third season, amassing eight goals (with a few highlight reel goals among them) and 11 assists in 31 appearances.
It came as no surprise to me that one of the best clubs in the world came calling for Davies. Bayern are a powerhouse and are always looking for world class talent. Davies has that and a very high ceiling. The reported transfer fee that could rise to around $20 million also was not surprising.
While he hasn’t broken into the starting XI consistently yet, he is often in the 18 for Bayern and has scored two league goals thus far. Both goals came in separate thrashing of Mainz, one in 2018-19 and one so far this season.
Davies is already a mainstay for an up-and-coming Canadian national team. If Canada can qualify for the 2022 World Cup (still a bit of a long shot) that would only raise his profile.
I see an excellent future for Davies and the 2020-21 season is one to keep an eye on for this tremendous talent.
Collectors can find Davies’ rookie cards in 2018-19 Donruss Soccer and 2018-19 Immaculate Soccer from Panini. He also is featured in a number of Topps NOW MLS releases.
