Future Watch: Anaheim Ducks Hockey Cards, trio to collect – The Anaheim Ducks are in a rebuilding on the fly mode, and so far, they have been getting some good results out of their young players. Many of them have graduated and are gaining valuable NHL experience despite a pedestrian record in the league. These gains may be shown up with good drafting and player development, and these players will be a part of that.

Trevor Zegras was drafted with the ninth overall pick in 2019. At the time I had thoughts that this was a steal, and it’s turning out that may be possible. The young center was a star with the U.S National Team Development Program, and he was a big part of Team USA’s gold medal win in the 2020 World Junior Championships. His play has been dominant internationally in two years with the U20’s as he scored 27 points in 12 games. His one full season at Boston University was super successful scoring 36 points in 33 games, and he started 2021 in the AHL with the San Diego Gulls, counting nine points in eight games. Zegras almost scored a lacrosse-type goal for his first in the NHL. The speed, confidence, and elusiveness on the ice make him a future star and potential superstar down the road.

Maxime Comtois is a 6-2, 207-pound power forward who is starting to put it all together. Going back to his days with the Victoriaville Tigres in the QMJHL and later the Drummondville Voltigeurs, his numbers were 123 goals and 244 points in 205 games played. Comtois is a very decorated player. He played in the CHL Top Prospects Game in 2016-17, and in 2018 the winger won a gold medal in the World Junior Championship representing Canada. In 35 games with the San Diego Gulls over parts of two seasons, Comtois scored 10 goals and 25 points in 35 games. He’s passed all the tests. In his first 65 NHL games, his 16 goals and 37 points are good for .057 points per game average. Comtois gets in some of those the dirty areas and some from the right or left side with a quick wrist shot. The best is yet to come for this developing player.

Sam Steel was drafted 30th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. Expectations weren’t enormous for him at the start until he led the CHL in scoring in the 2016-17 season with 50 goals and 131 points. That got people talking. Then seeing him star in the 2017-18 Memorial Cup raised expectations a bit more. Steel was the high scorer with 13 points in the tournament, and he was the tournament MVP, albeit in a losing cause. In 2018-19, he saw time with the Ducks and the Gulls. He scored 20 for the Gulls and six more in the playoffs. The problem with this versatile forward was he still needed to get physically stronger and a bit faster. In his first 25 NHL games in the 2020-21 season, Steel had eight points. He showed off his great hands. Steel is a nice sleeper pick to blossom down the road.
