Future Watch: Breeland Speaks Rookie Football Cards, Chiefs – Breeland Speaks was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 46th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Chiefs traded their 54th and 78th overall picks to the Cincinnati Bengals to move up for the NCAA star. The Chiefs did get the 100th overall pick back in that deal but they wanted that player and knew they’d have to move up to get him.
The 6-3, 285 defensive lineman was redshirted in his first season back in 2014. In 2015 he played every game at defensive tackle. He had 32 tackles a pick and a fumble recovery. Ole Miss was third in the SEC for tackles for a loss and he was a big part of that.
In 2016, he had eight quarterback hurries, 28 tackles, a sack, a pass breakup.
2017 was his best year. He started 10 out of 12 games. He started as a defensive tackle and ended the season as a defensive end. He was second on the team in tackles and sacks, with 67 and seven respectively. His eight tackles for a loss was big and he was named to the 2017 Second Team All-SEC by the Associated Press.
On his personal day he ran a 4.87, 40-yard dash and a 32.5 vertical leap plus a 9’2 broad jump. He’s an amazing athlete for his size and it was no wonder he didn’t get out of the second round of the draft.
In a tight game against New England, Speaks, now a linebacker, lost his grip on Tom Brady. Later he admitted he thought Brady had thrown the ball, that was why.
Still, he was having an impact:
Speaks hasn’t played in the playoffs but he might. Kansas City is still alive, and you never know if he gets a shot because of injury. Next year he will be a regular.
