Future Watch: C.J. Beathard Rookie Football Cards, 49ers – C.J. Beathard was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the 104th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. At 6′-2″, 215 pounds he has the right stuff on paper to be a solid NFL quarterback.

He starred at the University of Iowa. In 2013, he only saw five games of action as a freshman. The following season he got in eight games. He had five touchdowns and two interceptions. His completion percentage was 56.5% and that was showing improvement.

In 2015, he finally played a lot. In 14 games, he threw for 2,809 yards 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. He had a 61.6% completion percentage. Things were looking up for the Tennessee native. His team had a 12-0 record. He had second team honors on the 2015 All Big-Ten Conference team.

In 2016, he threw for 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His passing percentage was down to 56.5% in 13 games. The fact that he never won a bowl game and this season’s performance may be why he dropped in the draft.

At the moment, Beathard is the 49ers starting quarterback. In two pre-season games, he had 41 attempts, with a 55.4 pass completion percentage, two touchdowns, two interceptions and five fumbles. One of those is a rushing touchdown. His first regular season start was against the Cowboys in week seven. They lost 40-10. It’s a mixed bag but he’s on a rebuilding team so he’s going to take his lumps this season.

The coaching staff likes his toughness and willingness to learn. He is a threat to run and his passing is good and can get better. Collectors should be in on him. He should improve when the players around him get better.
