Future Watch: Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Cards, trio to collect – The Carolina Hurricanes have been drafting well for years. The proof is in the pudding, and once again, they will be trying to win the second Stanley Cup in franchise history. To win it, you must have a great mix of young and old. This trio will all have a hand it in if it happens.
Martin Necas was drafted 12th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. At that time, he was thought to be a valuable first or second line player, but this offensive winger was going to have to round out his game, and he did that in the Czech Elite League.
2017-18 was a big year of development for Necas. After going through what would be his last season in the Czech League, there was a playoff run that saw him score nine points in 14 games against men. During that season, he represented his country in the U20 World Junior Championship as well. As Necas plays important second line minutes as well as creeping towards a point-per-game output, the ceiling has not been reached by this prospect.

Andrei Svechnikov was drafted second overall in 2018. The Hurricanes would have drafted him first overall if they had the top pick. The Russian was the player they had identified as their “franchise player”.
His speed, vision, and eye-hand coordination are a nice package to have with any player but when you add the fact that he’s 6-2 and close to 200 pounds, that makes him a special left wing.
In his first 195 NHL games, his 130 points place him at 0.67 points per game average at the age of 21! The 2021 season will be his third postseason. He was more than a point-per-game last year with everything on the line. Expect that same kind of result and that means the Russian could be playing in his first Stanley Cup. That’s what the Hurricanes envisioned when they drafted him.

Jake Bean was drafted 13th overall in 2016. This slick-skating offensive defenseman has been over-marinating, and sometimes that’s the correct move when the player isn’t physically mature and when you envision a certain role for him that just isn’t available for a few years based on the NHL team’s talent.
In 2019 he played in the WHL, most of them with the Calgary Hitmen, the blueliner amassed 196 points in 219 games. Adding the postseason, where he was almost a point-per-player, that’s as good as it gets for most top defensemen.
In 129 games with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL, Bean had 23 goals and 92 points plus some postseason experience as well, including winning the Calder Cup in 2018-19. The next season his 48 points were the most by a defenseman in the Covid-19 shortened season. In his rookie season, the points are coming so expect to see more of them next year but collect him now.
