Future Watch: Casey Mittelstadt Rookie Hockey Cards, SabresFuture Watch: Casey Mittelstadt Rookie Hockey Cards, SabresCasey Mittelstadt was drafted eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He could have gone higher but he didn’t and the Sabres were the beneficiaries of that good fortune. If all goes right he could be playing in the NHL this season.

At 6-1, 201 pounds, this talented center started making noise at Eden Prairie high school in Minnesota. The year before the draft he had 59 points in 25 games. He had 22 goals in 25 games.

During his draft year he played in the USHL, for the Green Bay Gamblers while still playing for his high school. In 24 games for Green Bay he had 30 points in 24 games. With his high school he had 64 points in 25 games with 21 goals. He got the “Mr Hockeyaward denoting that he was the best player in Minnesota high school hockey.

Post-draft he played for the University of Minnesota. In 34 games he had 30 points as a true freshman. He was voted to the BIG All-Rookie team, a nice way to cap his college career. The Sabres saw all they needed to see and when his season ended they signed him.

He played six games for Buffalo getting five points. You can’t do much better as a young prospect. Now just 19, the expectations are that he’ll make the team and be a solid contributor in his first full professional season.

Here’s a look at his first NHL goal:

In international play he’s been a star as well. In 2015-16, he had nine points in seven games playing for the U18 team in the Hlinka Cup. He won a bronze that year and got a bronze medal playing for the U20 team in the 2017-18 World Junior Championship. In that tournament, which took place in Buffalo, he had 11 points in seven games. He was the tournament MVP, voted one of the best forwards and an All-Star all in front of his home crowd.

Mittelstadt’s rookie card can be found in 2018-19 Upper Deck MVP hockey and soon in other Upper Deck products. This Minnesota native has a chance to be a perennial all-star in the NHL. Don’t miss out.
