Future Watch: Cayden Primeau Rookie Hockey Cards, Canadiens – Cayden Primeau was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens 199th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. Considering there were 217 picks made, what are the odds that kind of player can even make it to the NHL?
His father is Keith and his uncles are Derrick Smith and Wayne Primeau, and they played in the NHL and that’s still not a guarantee of anything. It helps but none of them were goaltenders.
After a ho-hum season in the USHL, Cayden joined Northeastern in 2017-18. That season they won the Beanpot, a highly competitive tournament that’s held every February in Boston. He finished out the season with a 1.92 GAA and a .931 save percentage. He was voted to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, was the Goalie of the Year and more.
2018-19, another solid year for the young netminder. He won a second-consecutive Beanpot for the second time in the history of the University and was the Tournament MVP. He was and one of the best backstops in the country sporting a 2.09 GAA and a .933 save percentage. Accolades included; East All-American First-Team honors and the Mike Richter Award as the top goalie in the country. He then left school to turn pro.
Internationally he has already won gold and silver medals so look for him to continue that trend down the road for Team USA.
Collectors can find his Young Guns Rookie Card in Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey. Look for him in future releases as well.
During the 2019-20 season, Cayden got a call-up to the Montreal Canadiens and played in two games.
Here’s Keith watching his son play in his first NHL game:
