Future Watch: Cole Anthony Basketball Cards, Orlando Magic Cole Anthony is the son of UNLV legend and longtime NBA pro and broadcaster, Greg Anthony and the stepson of New York City mayoral candidate Raymond McGuire. A blue-chip prospect almost since he first picked up a basketball, the wealth of Anthony’s family may have led some to wonder about his capacity for resiliency if he were to hit any rough patches. But his trajectory over the last two years has erased any questions about his ability to rebound from adversity.
Anthony was the very picture of the golden child in his prep years, leading the USA to a gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship, becoming MVP of the McDonald’s High School All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoop Summit and a consensus five-star recruit and best point guard in his class.
Anthony’s tenure at North Carolina started as advertised on November 6th, 2019 with 34 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a win over Notre Dame. The hot streak continued until a meniscus injury in mid-December that put Anthony out for six weeks. Without Anthony, the Tar Heels unraveled en route to their first losing season under Coach Roy Williams and strong efforts in his return games could not shield him from the odor of his team’s unsuccessful season.
As anticipated, Anthony declared for the 2020 NBA Draft, but his near-miss on becoming a lottery pick, tumbling to Orlando at #15, could not have been foreseen at the start of the season. A strong scorer still developing in his distributing abilities, Anthony faced challenges coming into a roster with many oddly-shaped pieces. But a disappointing 2020 calendar year closed in promising fashion with the finest game of Anthony’s young career on December 31st, 16 points and seven rebounds. From there, however, a rib injury took out Anthony for almost two months in February, interrupting a run of four games of scoring in double digits prior to the game in which he got injured.
Fortunately for Anthony, his time away did not interrupt his scoring pace or his improving passing. Anthony’s growing all-around game was showcased on May 1st with 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists and again in the season finale on May 16th with 37 points and eight rebounds. Having spent his rookie year improving his ability as a court general and demonstrating that he could face down tough circumstances, Anthony is answering the remaining questions that stood between himself and projections of stardom.
