Future Watch: Collin Sexton Basketball Cards, Cleveland Cavaliers – Having a shock-the-world moment on January 20 – upstaging the Nets’ debut of the James Harden/Kyrie Irving/Kevin Durant combo by being the best player on the floor and leading Cleveland to a shocking 147-135 win behind 42 points, five rebounds and five assists – was not the first time that he pushed well passed expectations.

But, as his defining NBA performance to date, it may be the last time that it is necessary to remind the world exactly what he can do.

Lightly recruited coming out of high school notwithstanding winning the gold medal and capturing MVP honors in the 2016 FIBA Under-17 World Championship, Sexton attended the University of Alabama – partially out of his interest in learning the point guard position from coach and NBA veteran Avery Johnson. He attracted national attention for his performance against Minnesota on November 25, 2017. Due to a combination of ejections from a large fight between the squads and remaining Crimson Tide players fouling out, Sexton was forced to play the final ten minutes three-on-five, but still tallied 40 points and led a furious rally that ultimately wasn’t successful. Notably, afterwards, rather than just taking pride in his performance, he was inconsolable at having come up short.

As such, coming into the pros in the 2018 draft, his high motor, competitiveness, athleticism and mid-range offense were highly prized. In a loaded draft class, he slipped to the Cavaliers with the eighth pick – the most valuable asset received in the Kyrie Irving trade and the one deployed just as Lebron James was leaving town again, marking him as the foundation for the team’s future.

His three-point shooting proved excellent from the start of his career (40.2% in 2018-19), although the volume will need to increase over time. Having demonstrated that he is better as one of the Cavs’ many secondary playmakers, the 2019 draft selection of Darius Garland has freed him up to play off the ball and focus more on his offense. As such, his points-per-game rose from 16.7 in his rookie campaign to 20.8 last year and has hovered around 23 for most of this season. He is quickly becoming one of the best pure scorers in the league.

Collin Sexton rookie cards popped out of 2018-19 products, and his first 2020-21 cards are coming out of boxes of 2020-21 Panini Hoops.
