Future Watch: Dante Pettis Rookie Football Cards, 49ers
Dante Pettis was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 44th overall pick. He played his college ball at Washington and one has to wonder why he slipped in the second round of the draft?
The 6-1 receiver was a true freshman in 2014. That season he had 17 receptions for 259 yards and a touchdown. He also gained 299 yards as a punt returner with a touchdown. It was a good start to his college career.
In 2015, he had 30 receptions for 414 yards and a touchdown with another 271 yards as a punt returner with two more touchdowns.
In 2016, he had 822 yards on 53 receptions and 15 touchdowns. He added two more touchdowns as a punt returner with 288 return yards.
In 2017, he broke the NCAA career touchdown mark as a punt returner with nine in his career. He was first team All-Pac-12, a Consensus All-American and he won the Jet Award in honor of Johnny “The Jet” Rodgers, former Heisman Trophy winner, as the nation’s top return specialist. He did have 761 yards in the air and seven more touchdowns. That seemed to take a back seat with scouts and perhaps that’s why the 49ers got him where they did.
Pettis played in his first NFL game against a tough Vikings defense. He had 2 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. That was a 39-yarder that was something that’s worth seeing:
Word on the street is his role will be expanding after this eye-opening performance. It’s only one game but you may not have much more time until everybody finds out just how good this prospect can be.
