Future Watch: Darnell Mooney Football Cards, Chicago Bears – Darnell Mooney was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Every team wants players who can stretch the field, and this guy can do that and can be scary in the open.
Mooney attended Gadsen City High School in Alabama. He wasn’t going to be a five-star recruit and had to work hard at finding a school. Ultimately, Tulane University was his destination.
In 2016, as a freshman, Mooney caught 24 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. In 2017, he was more of a target, grabbing 34 passes for 599 yards (long of 52) and four touchdowns.
In 2018, Mooney was being used a lot more and caught 48 passes for 993 yards (20.7 average!) and eight touchdowns. In 2019, he caught 48 again with 713 yards for a 54.8 average and five touchdowns.
At the NFL Combine, Mooney showed off great speed with a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash and a 37.0 inch vertical. He added a 10ft, 4-inch broad jump and nine reps on the weight bench of 225 pounds – impressive for a 176 pounder!

It took Mooney a little while to be a consistent target in the NFL. In his debut in Week 1’s win against the Detroit Lions, Mooney caught three passes for 38 yards. The next week against the Giants, he caught his first touchdown. In Week 8, Mooney caught a 50-yard pass, and was targeted 11 times.

So far this season, the speedster has 33 catches for 351 yards and two touchdowns. He’s getting open, and his yardage will start to increase. Collectors should be in on him very soon.
