Future Watch: Daron Payne Rookie Football Cards, Redskins – Daron Payne was selected by the Washington Redskins with the 13th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. At 6-2, 320 pounds you would expect him to be able to stop the run and occasionally get a quarterback sack.
The Birmingham, Alabama native stayed close to home and attended the University of Alabama. A sign of his talent was the fact that he played there as a “true freshman”. He had 13 tackles and a half a sack, and he experienced winning his first National Championship.
As a sophomore, in 2016, he had 36 tackles and 1 ½ sacks. He played in the National Championship Game against Clemson and had five tackles and a half a sack. They lost the National Championship game, but Payne and Alabama weren’t done.
In 2017, he was solid in the regular season, but he really elevated his game in the postseason. In the Sugar Bowl against Clemson, he had an interception and he caught a touchdown. In the National Championship game against Georgia, he had six tackles. He won another National Championship. Payne was the MVP of both of those games, and he decided to turn pro.
At the NFL Combine, he ran an astounding 4.95, 40-yard dash. He did 27 reps on the bench press. He was all set.
Here he is in action:
Payne started in all 16 games for the Washington Redskins in 2018. He had three passes defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery of nine yards and five sacks. He had 56 combined tackles, 35 of them were solo, and he added six tackles for a loss and eight quarterback hits. He’s valuable and he’s going to be an All-Pro in the future.
