Future Watch: Daryl Dike Soccer Cards, Orlando SC – One of the top young attacking players in MLS is Orlando City SC’s Daryl Dike. The 20-year old forward is in his rookie season after being draft number five overall earlier this year in the MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Virginia.
Dike has had a stellar first season with eight goals in 17 league appearances (including 15 starts). He has also added an impressive four assists to help the Lions to 4th in the Eastern Conference and a playoff berth. And he has been red hot recently; in his last four starts, Dike had a goal in each and added one assist.
Dike is an absolute force inside the 18. He has great size (6’2”, 220lbs) and can score with his head and his feet. He has a great work ethic and does not give up on plays. Often, he can capitalize on reading situations where defenders might fall asleep a bit and he finds himself in good scoring opportunities because of how he anticipates the play.
Dike is a smart attacker. He is not always flashy in his style and manner but he has a good skill set with the ball at his feet. He plays quickly and with intent and his shot is both accurate and powerful.
Dike has not yet played for the U.S. National Team. In fact, he is also eligible to play for Nigeria. U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter would do well to take a very long look at Dike for the future. The forward spot appears to still be a bit “up for grabs” with the United States and Dike could well be an excellent fit with other young attacking players around him like Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna. Dike’s hard working style and calm finishing could thrive with those teammates feeding him the football.
