Future Watch: Dennis Cholowski Rookie Hockey Cards, Red Wings
Dennis Cholowski was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. This defenseman seems to have made a fast rise to the NHL, but the path started a long time ago.
In 2013-14, then 18, he played one game for the Chilliwack Chiefs at the age of 18. For the next two seasons there he had 67 points in 106 games as a defenseman, that put him on the map.
Post draft he decided to play for St. Cloud State. He passed the test there scoring 12 points in 36 games. After his college season ended the Canadian played one AHL game for the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In 2017-18, Cholowski left his NCAA team to join the Prince George Cougars in the WHL. He wore the “A” there and he had a great half season scoring 39 points and 13 goals in 37 games. Cholowski later was traded to Portland where he had 27 points in 32 games. He also played in 12 playoff games getting five goals and seven points. After that season ended, he played in one AHL playoff game.
The 6-0, 194-pound prospect looked good in training camp and got a long look by the Red Wings, a team in the midst of a rebuild and a few injuries on the blueline to start the season.
In his first 13 games, he had eight points. It looks good that he’ll stick with the big club.
Here’s a look at his first NHL goal:
