Future Watch: Detroit Red Wings Hockey Cards, trio to collect – The Detroit Red Wings are in the midst of a full rebuild. General Manager Steve Yzerman didn’t pull any punches. He laid out a long-term plan and for the immediate future, the Red Wings are about drafting and developing. Last year’s first selection, Lucas Raymond, was one of the best players in the Draft. You won’t read about him here because he doesn’t have any major card releases (yet). For now, read about this very interesting trio.

Filip Zadina was drafted sixth overall in 2018. Starring in the Czech Elite League is one thing, getting that to translate to North America was always going to be a process. Scoring 44 goals and 82 points for the Halifax Mooseheads in the QMJHL boosted his draft stock. After the Draft, Zadina played nine games to get the taste but played the bulk of the year with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Scoring 16 goals as a rookie was something to build on. Zadina had to get physically stronger to play better defense and survive in the offensive zone. In 2019-20, the winger split time in the AHL and NHL, and this year he’s a regular in the bigs. In his first 26 games, he has 12 points but is getting good reviews from the team for his overall play. With the fast shot he has, a high ceiling is still there for him.

Joe Veleno was the first player from Quebec to be granted exceptional status and play in major junior hockey at the age of 15. Veleno started with the Saint John Sea Dogs and finished up with Drummondville Voltigeurs. This star center had 266 points in 230 games but there were questions about his overall game and ability to play a full 60 minutes. Detroit getting him 30th was a potential steal. In 2019-20, Veleno started the year in the AHL with Grand Rapids and joined Team Canada in the 2020 World Junior Championship and was a big part of their gold medal team. His development wasn’t stalled due to the Covid-19 impact. In 2020, the Red Wings made sure Veleno was on loan and played overseas for the Malmo Redhawks in the SHL. In his first 43 games, he potted 10 goals and 18 points. His speed, strength, and great hands should take him a long way.

Moritz Seider is a 6-4 blueliner who was selected sixth overall in 2019. This fast skating, offensive defenseman starred with Adler Manheim in the DEL since the latter part of the 2017-18 season. The following season, Seider got some playoff experience and most facets of his game shined except his offense. In 2019-20, he played with Grand Rapids getting 22 points that season. His shot, passing, and hockey I.Q. are all excellent. While on loan playing for Rogle BK in the SHL, the German had six goals and 27 points in his first 39 games. Seider will enter next season as a strong 20-year-old looking to carve out a season in Detroit.
