Future Watch: Diego Rossi Rookie Soccer Cards, LAFC – When LAFC signed attacker Diego Rossi in 2018 as a Young Designated Player from the storied club Uruguayan club Peñarol, they believed he could fit right in and star for the expansion side. They were correct.
Rossi scored the team’s first ever goal and never looked back in his inaugural campaign in MLS. The smooth skilled winger tallied 12 goals and 9 assists. He drew 62 fouls while relentlessly hammering defenses. It’s rare to find a young player who is so consistent and steady in his level of play. LAFC is 8-2-2 in games where he scores (including two goals already in 2019).
Rossi helped lead an offense that averaged 2 goals per game, second best in the league. But it wasn’t just league play where he thrived. LAFC made a deep run in the U.S. Open Cup thanks in large part to Rossi’s heroics. He scored 5 goals and had an assist in four Cup matches last year.
The 21-year old can take on defenders at pace. He has speed and quickness aplenty and has no fear when it comes to attacking. His vision is top class and he is a selfless teammate, willing to pass the ball. Rossi is also not afraid to track back and get dirty on the defensive side as well.
His future with the Uruguayan National Team also seems inevitable. Rossi played for the U-17 and U-20 teams. He helped the U-20 side win the South American Championship.
There is little doubt Rossi can follow in the footsteps of fellow Uruguayans who have thrived in the best league in Europe. Players like Luis Suarez, Diego Godin, Edinson Cavani and Martin Caceres have paved the way. Rossi might be next.
Until then, he will continue to dominate MLS for the Black and Gold. Collectors can find Diego Rossi’s MLS cards in 2018 Topps MLS Soccer and 2018 Topps Stadium Club MLS.
