Future Watch: Diontae Johnson Rookie Football Cards, Steelers – Diontae Johnson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The 5-10 wide receiver had a great career at Toledo that catapulted him to the NFL.
The University of Toledo isn’t a huge football establishment. There is a fair amount of NHL Alumni, just not big household names. Johnson, a high school quarterback, and wide receiver, played in 11 games in his first season in 2015, he had three touchdowns and averaged 22.8 yards per kickoff return showing his versatility.
He was injured in 2015, so he redshirted and retained his sophomore eligibility.
In 2017, he was named to the First-Team All-Mac as a receiver and Second-Team as a punt returner. That season he made 74 catches and had a school-record 1,278 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also had 683 kickoff return yards. What a year!
In 2018, he was the MAC Special Teams Player of the Year. And named to the same two All-Mac teams. He had 43 catches for 663 yards and seven touchdown catches and punt (was a return of 83 yards) and kickoff return touchdowns as well.
