Future Watch: Donovan Mitchell Rookie Basketball Cards, Jazz – This past offseason for the Utah Jazz was a rollercoaster. The team was heartbroken when they were unable to retain star forward Gordon Heyward, who left in free agency for the Boston Celtics. Utah pivoted quickly by acquiring veteran point guard Ricky Rubio via trade, which gave them a primary ballhandler. Still, the Jazz needed scoring. Thankfully their move to acquire 13th overall pick in the 2017 Draft, Donovan Mitchell, has paid off to start the season.

Mitchell attended multiple high schools as a prep, eventually settling on Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Early on, he was a two-sport athlete, playing baseball and basketball. After his sophomore year, he focused entirely on basketball for his junior and senior seasons. This paid off, and Mitchell gained more attention from college basketball coaches and scouts. He would eventually commit to play for the University of Louisville under head coach Rick Pitino.

Mitchell spent two seasons with Cardinals, wearing #45 as a tribute to Michael Jordan’s baseball career. As a freshman, he averaged 7.4 points, 1.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He made a big leap in scoring during is sophomore season when his points per game jumped to 15.6. This effort earned him First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, and a lot of attention from NBA scouts. After his sophomore year, Mitchell entered the NBA draft.

Scouts at the NBA Draft Combine were floored by Mitchell’s measurements, athletic testing numbers and shooting ability during drills. He immediately began to soar up draft boards. He stands at only 6’1” without shoes, but his massive 6’10” wingspan compensates for that. His fantastic athleticism allows him to keep up with most guards and even some smaller 3’s.

Utah has struggled out of the gate the season as they try to find a new identity after losing Gordon Heyward. Luckily, Mitchell has stepped up for the team. He is second in points per game with 14.6, and he has started six of the team’s 14 games with significant minutes increases. Recently, he’s been stellar, scoring 26 and 24 points in each of his last two games. Utah may not be the most desirable team to collect, but Donovan Mitchell may change that perspective. Fans of the Jazz and collectors around the nation should take notice of Mitchell’s game!
