Future Watch: Filip Hronek Rookie Hockey Cards, Red Wings – Filip Hronek was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings with the 53rd overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. This Czech blueliner figures heavy into the Red Wings rebuild and he might be the most overlooked rookie in 2018-19 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey.
Pre-draft, this offensive defenseman had a good U18 getting three points in five games. That helped to solidify his draft stock, plus he skates well and he’s 6-0. He had the best plus-minus on his team in the tournament with a +10.
In 2016-17, he was one of the three best players on his team in the U20 World Junior Championship. After that season he left the Czech Elite league to try North America out for size.
He played for Grand Rapids, Detroit’s AHL affiliate, in 2017-18 and ended up scoring 11 goals and getting 39 points in 67 games. He was a +24 on the season and he got postseason experience. After the season he was voted to the All-Rookie team. That season he played in the World Championships against older players and got three points in five games.
In 2018-19 he played in the AHL and for the Red Wings in the NHL. In the AHL he had 24 points in 31 games. For the Red Wings, he had 23 points in 46 games. He had five goals and he opened up some eyes. Hronek played in the World Championships once again and got eight assists and 11 points in 10 games. He was voted to the All-Star team post-tournament and was voted best defenseman in the tournament.
Here’s a look at what he did:
Hronek’s Young Guns rookie card can be found in 2018-19 Upper Deck Series One Hockey. He has rookies in SP Authentic, Engrained and O-Pee-Chee to name a few.
Hronek will get an opportunity this season. If he comes through like last season, he will be a surprise player in the league this year. Don’t miss out.
