Future Watch: Gedson Fernandes Rookie Soccer Cards, Tottenham – In January, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho made his first move for a new player for the club. Mourinho brought in 21-year-old Gedson Fernandes on loan from Portuguese giants Benfica. The loan was for 18 months initially with a large purchase fee if Spurs decide they want Fernandes permanently.
Why would Mourinho make the move for the midfielder in the first place? Well, Fernandes is loaded with talent and will likely fit in very well to Spurs’ side. He has all the tools and skills, to go along with some nifty tricks with the football at his feet. But he can also play very simply and subtly which makes him a well rounded player.
Fernandes can score from deep with a blistering right footed shot but his left foot is certainly not a weakness. He is player who can control tempo through the midfield and will work defensively for his side. I don’t expect him to rack up “stats” but rather to become a force that drives a game for a team and maintains a control and balance over a match. Once he gets comfortable with Mourinho’s style and wishes from him, Fernandes can show well for Spurs consistently.
Fernandes came through the Benfica academy and has played for Portugal at various youth levels. He helped his country win the UEFA European Under-17 Championships in 2016. He has 2 caps so far for the national team, recording an assist on a perfectly weighted long pass in a friendly versus Scotland in 2018.
