Future Watch: Irv Smith Jr Rookie Football Cards, VikingsFuture Watch: Irv Smith Jr Rookie Football Cards, Vikings – Irv Smith Jr. was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the 50th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The 6-2 tight end starred at the University of Alabama.

In 2016, he was a true freshman and like 99.9% of them at Alabama he didn’t have a reception. It was a learning year.

The 2017 saw him playing in nine games. He had 14 receptions for 128 yards and three touchdowns. His 9.1 yards per catch average is a quarterback’s best friend in check downs. He ended that season a national champion, not bad.

In 2018, he played in 15 games and had 44 receptions for 710 yards and seven touchdowns. His 16.1 yards per catch is outstanding for a tight end. That year he was voted to the Second-Team All-SEC, won another SEC championship but not the national championship. He then chose to turn pro after that.

At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.63, 40-yard dash and 19 reps on the weight bench. His uncle Edward was a tight end for the Falcons and his dad was a tight end in the NFL as well for seven seasons most notably with the New Orleans Saints.

After he was drafted the Vikings proclaimed, he would be a big part of their offense in the future. They expect him to line up in a variety of spots on the gridiron.

The Vikings are working him in slowly. He’s used to that and they’re a very good team. So far, he only has one NFL reception, but many think he will be worked into the offense as the season moves on. He could be a sleeper but now you know about him.
