Future Watch: James Wiseman Basketball Cards, Golden State Warriors – If you decided to skip the 2019-20 NBA season, you missed one of the greatest plunges from greatness as the Golden State Warriors tumbled from dynasty status to being at the bottom of the Western Conference. The result, however, is that the team was able to grab the second-overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and used the opportunity to select James Wiseman.
Wiseman stands over seven feet tall, which immediately gives him an imposing presence; but this is only the start, as the NBA itself detailed in its draft preview profile:
“Possessing an impressive combination of size and mobility, Wiseman runs the floor exceptionally well for a player listed at 7-foot-1 and 247-pounds. With a 9-foot-6 standing reach, his dimensions are a factor around the rim on both end of the floor.”
Wiseman’s back story is certainly unique. A standout in high school, Wiseman was considered a five-star recruit at secondary’s end and was picked up by the University of Memphis; however his time on college court was limited first by injuries and then by an NCAA injunction which disqualified him from playing amid allegations that coach Penny Hardaway had provided funding to Wiseman’s family for the move to Memphis, a big-time no-no. Though Wiseman was eventually reinstated, he decided to leave Memphis and pursue his NBA dream.
All told, Wiseman racked up 19.7 PPG and 10.3 RPG averages in his three games of play in Memphis.
