Future Watch: Josh Sargent Rookie Soccer Cards, Werder Bremen – Josh Sargent is one of the most intriguing young American soccer players currently playing abroad. The skilled 19-year old forward is beginning to make a name for himself in Germany, playing for Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.
What stands out about Sargent is his willingness to “play” and go after defenses with his skill set and creativity. He is not afraid to fail around the area, which makes him even tougher to defend. Sargent is not predictable and he is unselfish around goal as well. But, he’s also a very calm and capable finisher, as he displayed in scoring his first Bundesliga goal this season in a match against Augsburg. After timing a brilliant run to perfection, Sargent took the cross out of the air and cheekily flipped the ball over the head of the onrushing keeper, finishing off the play and cooly slotted it home with a simple touch. That play encapsulated why so many American fans are excited to see how he develops.
Internationally, Sargent made a big splash in 2017, playing in two World Cups for the U.S. (U17 and U20). In the U17 tournament, Sargent scored three goals. In the U20 World Cup, he took home the Silver Boot Award with four goals and an assist.
The St. Louis area native is now establishing himself with the senior U.S. National Team as well. He scored a goal in his debut in May, 2018 against Bolivia. Overall, he has two goals in nine caps with the senior squad and has been called up for Nations League games.
I see a lot of the same skills and soccer brain from Sargent that I saw in former American great Eric Wynalda, who also enjoyed success in Germany and with the national team. If Sargent develops at the pace he’s going, he will become a double digit goal scorer for club and a crucial piece in hopefully a deep World Cup 2022 run for country.
Collectors can find Sargent’s cards in 2018-19 Panini Immaculate Soccer and 2018-19 Donruss Soccer. Topps has recently started a partnership with Bundesliga and there’s a good chance you’ll find his cards in 2019-20 Topps Chrome Bundesliga. Topps NOW also has a card commemorating Sargent’s first Bundesliga goal.
