Future Watch: Kansas City Royals Baseball Cards, trio to collect – The Kansas City Royals are a team that’s rebuilding, and while that’s happening, they are drafting some grade-A talent. This takes a while, so fans have to be patient, but when it’s over, maybe, just maybe, they can become World Series contenders once again.

Nick Loftin was drafted 32nd overall in the 2020 MLB Amateur Draft. He’s a versatile player who had turns at second base, shortstop, third base outfield and even a couple games as a relief pitcher at Baylor University. In 2015, Loftin was voted a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. In three seasons, Loftin hit 14 home runs, drove in 92, and had a .486 slugging percentage. He only played 14 games in 2020 when the season was cut short. He took part in Spring Training in 2021 and will play somewhere in the Royals’ minor system. His arc continues to rise, and this is a prospect to watch closely.

Bobby Witt Jr. was drafted second overall in 2019. There is a ton of hype surrounding this prospect for good reason. He is a second-generation shortstop who has a tremendous glove and range that is second to none. Witt played at the Royals’ Rookie-level affiliate in the Arizona League in 2019. His two doubles, five triples, one home run, and 27 RBI showed off his offensive abilities. His 35 strikeouts in 37 games showed a need to harness his at-bats and that’s what he’s working on now. His fielding is ahead of his hitting. Last season he played at the alternate training site, and this year Witt was invited to Spring Training. He was then sent to the Columbia Fireflies, their Low-A affiliate, to continue training and get ready for the 2021 season. He will play some outfield there as well because that could speed up his path to the big leagues.

Erick Pena was signed by the Royals as an amateur free agent in 2019. This sweet-swinging left has that sound off the bat that equates to home run power. His 6-3, 200-pound frame is drawing comparisons to former Royals great, Carlos Beltran. I don’t think that’s fair to hang on a 17-year-old prospect. Last season, Pena played for the DSL Royals. Pena showed off his power and speed around the basepaths. That’s the only baseball he played last year, and he has to wait until May to start playing minor league baseball. This isn’t ideal for any baseball player, but the Royals have done a nice job staying in touch with this future star, and soon we will see what he can do.
