Future Watch: Keegan Akin Rookie Baseball Cards, Orioles – Keegan Akin was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft. This 6-0, 225 pitcher has a lot of promise and the Orioles are hoping to see him at the major league level very soon.
In 2016, he pitched in nine games in Short-A for the Aberdeen IronBirds. He struck out 29 batters in 25 innings. He didn’t collect a win, but he had a dominating 1.04 ERA.
In 2017, while pitching for the Frederick Keys in the Carolina League (advanced A) he was 7-8 with a 4.14 ERA. He had 111 strikeouts in 100 innings in 21 starts. Those are the kinds of reps that are important to a developing pitcher.
In 2018, he was promoted to Double-A. He’s pitching for the Bowie Baysox. In his first 15 games he compiled an 8-5 record with a solid 2.63 ERA. In 85 2/3 innings he struck out 92 and walked just 38. Opponents were hitting just .199 against him. As a 23-year-old, he’s having a breakout year.
He has a 2017 Bowman Baseball Chrome Prospects Autograph card and that’s a good way to get him into your collection.
According to his MLB.com draft profile:
Akin’s repeatable delivery and clean arm action allow him to paint both sides of the plate with a fastball that sits at 91-94 mph and reaches 96. His go-to secondary offering is a short, above-average slider in the low 80s, and he also demonstrates feel for a changeup that could be at least average. He throws each of his three pitches for strikes, and club officials rave about how he attacks the inner-half against right-handed hitters. ETA 2019.
Akin went from Western Michigan University to the minors and soon he’ll be pitching in Baltimore. He set the school strikeout record for one season there and something tells me he has a chance to do that with the Orioles.
