Future Watch: Luis Medina Rookie Baseball Cards, Yankees – Luis Medina was signed as an international free agent by the New York Yankees in 2015. That offseason they signed 10 of the top 30 and 15 players in total. They were very busy.
At 16, he was a name on a report. At 17, he pitched 4.2 solid innings for the Yankees Dominican Summer League team to get his feet wet.
In 2017, he started 10 games in rookie ball. He was 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA for the Pulaski Yankees and later the Yankees Dominican team once again. Medina did throw 38 2/3 innings recording 39 strikeouts. He was far from a finished product, but he was still a very young pitching prospect.
According to his MLB.com draft profile:
Medina has an exceptionally quick arm that consistently generates 95-100 mph heat. Both of his secondary pitches have a chance to be plus pitches as well. He has advanced feel for spinning a power curveball and shows an aptitude for using a changeup. As exciting as his stuff is, Medina is still just 18 and extremely raw. He’s more thrower than pitcher at this point, and he’s still in the early stages of figuring out how to harness his overpowering arsenal. ETA 2021.
In 2018, he was back with Pulaski. In 36 innings he struck out a stellar 47, but the 46 walks show that he has work to do. He was just 1-3 but the Yankees are still very high on him.
At 6-1, 175, he has some filling out to do but he can bring the heat:
Once this prospect starts throwing strikes, he will have the kind of stuff that #2 or #3 starters have. Since he’s destined to play in the Bronx, don’t wait until it’s too late to start collecting him.
