Future Watch: Mathieu Joseph Rookie Hockey Cards, LightningFuture Watch: Mathieu Joseph Rookie Hockey Cards, LightningMathieu Joseph was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 120th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. As a high scoring forward, this was thought to be a steal of a pick.

In 2013-14, he got his feet wet with the Saint John Sea Dogs. In 2014-15, he had 21 goals and 42 points in 59 games. He got to play in the postseason and had three points in five games. Next year was going to be his draft year.

The winger had 33 goals and 73 points in 58 games for the 2015-16 season. He scored a goal a game in the playoffs and had seven points in five games. And yet he slipped in the draft. Defensive concerns and a slight frame may have been the reasons why.

He broke out in 2016-17. He had 36 goals and 80 points in 54 games. In 18 postseason games, he had 13 goals and 32 points! He was a QMJHL champion that year leading all scorers with assists and points and he was selected to the second all-star team. In the middle of the year, he represented his country in the U20 World Junior Championship and took home a silver medal. He had five points in seven games.

Collectors can find his rookie card in 2018-19 Series 2 Upper Deck Hockey. He has additional rookies in Synergy, SP Game-Used, and O-Pee-Chee to name a few.

In 2017-18, the Lightning resisted temptation and sent Joseph to the AHL for the entire season. He had a nice year with 15 goals and 53 points in 70 games.

Here’s a look at one of his goals:

In 2018-19, on a team with Stanley Cup hopes, the French Canadian played in 70 games netting 13 goals and getting 13 assists. He was a plus player and pretty productive considering he didn’t get a ton of ice time. He got to play in the playoffs and his team was unexpectedly swept. Expect this player to have a solid year next season.
