Future Watch: Mitch Keller Rookie Baseball Cards, PiratesFuture Watch: Mitch Keller Rookie Baseball Cards, PiratesMitch Keller was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft. He’s a very talented pitcher the second in his family to get drafted. His brother, Jon, was drafted back in the 2013 draft by the Baltimore Orioles.

While attending Cedar Rapids Xavier High School, Keller did well in his first season playing for the GCL Pirates he did well in his nine-game stint. He posted a 1.98 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 27 innings. He was on his way. In 2016, he had to take a few months off for a forearm issue. That season he still played for two teams earning a 9-5 record with a 2.35 ERA, a .092 WHIP and 138 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings.

In 2017, he continued to climb the ladder starting the season in Short-A, then advancing to A-ball and ending the season in Double-A with the Altoona Curve. He ended it strong with 45 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings. He had a 1.04 WHIP and a 2-2 record with a 3.12 earned run average. All was well with the Pirates #1 rated prospect according to Baseball America.

Collectors can get his 2017 Bowman Chrome autographed rookie card.

According to his MLB.com draft profile http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=pit

The younger brother of Orioles pitching prospect Jon Keller, Mitch is tall and projectable, with a fastball that now sits in the 90-94 mph range. When he’s not trying to overthrow, he has good sink on it, with the potential to be a ground-ball machine. He can really spin his breaking ball, an 11-to-5 curve that could be above-average in the future. He’s shown some feel for a changeup, and his third pitch was developing well as he got more consistent mound time. ETA 2018.

Here’s a look at the 6-3 pitcher’s stuff:

Will Keller make the Pirates squad out of Spring Training? That’s a lot to expect out of the soon-to-be 22-year-old. Could he pitch in the big leagues next season? The possibility is there so stay tuned. You can follow him on Twitter @mkeller11.
