Future Watch: Najee Harris Football Cards, Pittsburgh Steelers Najee Harris was selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2021 NFL Draft. Harris is a dual threat on the ground and in the air and with an organization like Pittsburgh, this seems like a perfect match.

Harris first making headlines at Antioch High School in Antioch, California. 2014 was his sophomore season, and it was special. He gained 2,263 yards with 24 touchdowns. The following years got better and better until he was ranked the top recruit in a few different scouting services.

Harris was utilized well in his four seasons with the University of Alabama as a running back. 2017 was his freshman season there, and he played but not a lot, and he won his first of two, College Football Playoff National Championship Game victories.

In 2018, he progressed, but in 2019, he broke out with 1,224 yards and 13 touchdowns including seven receiving touchdowns.

2020 was his year. He gained 1,466 yards with 26 rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns. In the SEC Championship Game, the 230-pound back was the MVP with 245 yards from scrimmage with five touchdowns in a 52-46 throttling over Florida. They won another National Championship game that season as well. He was ready for the pros.

With a back this gifted, and having a 6-2 frame, the fact that he can run a 4.45 in the 40, means he can take a swing pass to the house with a block or two, or he can go deep on a fly pattern to see if the opponent can cover him with the rest of the field to account for. These are the kinds of matchup problems Harris will cause, and he will have Ben Roethlisberger there to exploit the opponent’s defense. This is a great situation for him to be in now.

In rookie camp, his coach, Mile Tomlin beamed when talking about his new toy. Harris understands the X’s and O’s well for a young player. The fact that he said the Steelers play the same offense as Alabama did is a plus for him. The fact that he’s played in so many big games means he’s used to having the spotlight on him, and he won’t shrink at the biggest moments.

Harris is at home in front of the camera, and that’s good playing in a football-crazed city like Pittsburgh. He was the first running back taken in this draft for a reason. He is going to break the mold of what we expect running backs to do in most offensive sets.

Collectors can’t pass up this player because he’s got a chance to be special and winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award may not be far from his grasp.
