Future Watch: New York Islanders Hockey Cards, Trio to collect: The New York Islanders are a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. They have a solid starting goalie and one of the best rookie goaltenders in the NHL along with a few other very talented prospects. The future is looking very bright for the Long Island based team. They are making a Stanley Cup run in 2021 and Head Coach Barry Trotz is developing his young talent at the same time. Collectors will want to make sure these players are in their binders.

Ilya Sorokin is one of the best young goaltenders in the NHL. Having Semyon Varlamov ahead of him is a big reason why he’s not going to get the reigns as the top netminder this season. Sorokin spent six years playing for CSKA in the KHL posting great numbers. His highest save percentage there was .955 and his lowest was .929. He’s very athletic and reads shooters very well. He is rarely out of position and his clears and passing are above average. Sorokin’s save percentage after five NHL games were above average at .912. The Russian has a chance to be special.

Oliver Wahlstrom was a star for the U.S. National Team Development Program and that helped him get drafted 11th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. His elite shot, sturdy 6-2, over 200-pound frame even then, and some occasional toughness made him an enticing package. In 2018-19, Wahlstrom followed up his NCAA career with Boston College with a solid five games apiece the regular and post-seasons with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, counting four points. Wahlstrom got called up in mid-October for a nine-game look-see in the NHL. He’s now scoring goals for the Islanders.

Noah Dobson has the potential to be a premium blueliner and that’s why the Islanders drafted him 12th overall in 2018. Dobson had a fantastic junior career including two Memorial Cup wins with Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the QMJHL. Dobson played 34 games with the Islanders last season in choice situations. Fast forward to 2021, his skating is even better, he’s stronger and he is getting more power play time. His point totals are up significantly, and his defense has been more than solid. At 21, averaging over 16 minutes of ice time a game on a Trotzcoached team means he is doing his job. Expect more points in the future and collect him with no regrets.
