Future Watch: Nicolo Zaniolo Soccer Cards, Roma – Nicolo Zaniolo is an immense talent. The question for Zaniolo is how he comes back from not one, but now his second serious knee injury suffered in 2020. The first came in January and then another one in September, with both requiring surgery. Zaniolo will not likely return to the pitch for a few months yet, but he is worth keeping an eye on.
The Roma midfielder is still just 21 years old. He has not yet made an appearance this season. Despite his first knee injury in January, Zaniolo had 26 appearances in Serie A with six goals and two assists in the 2019-20 season. In the 2018-19 campaign, he recorded four goals and two assists in 27 appearances in league play. These markers and others were captured in a compilation video:
Zaniolo has all the skill one is looking for in a modern midfielder. He starts and stops with the ball at his feet with a smoothness and efficiency that is eye catching. He is willing to work on both ends of the pitch for his side as well. He can show some trickery with the ball at his feet and use it to further his offense.
I like his ability to hit the long pass and bring his teammates into the attack with him. He is very skilled with both feet, has good vision and a sense of where he is on the pitch and can play at a good pace.
If Zaniolo makes a fully recovery from this most recent knee injury, look for him to continue to elevate his game and become one of the top young players in the world. He will also likely continue to grow into his role for the Italian national team (it was an international game against Netherlands in which Zaniolo suffered the second injury).
