Future Watch: Nikolaj Ehlers Rookie Hockey Cards, Winnipeg Jets Few players are as exciting and engineered to play the game of hockey like Winnipeg rookie, Nikolaj Ehlers. Like most youngsters, he had to get a bit stronger before making his NHL debut and now at 6′, 176lbs, which is 14 ponds heavier than they day he was drafted 9th overall in 2014, he’s ready.

His father Heinz, a noted hockey coach in Denmark was drafted himself back in 1984, in the 9th round by the New York Rangers. He never played in the NHL but what he did was teach the important aspects of game to his son. This is clearly evident by the way the younger Ehlers plays on both sides of the ice. He has a natural instinct for knowing where to be on the ice, with, or without the puck. At just 19-years old, Nikolaj is wise beyond his years.

In 2013-14 he won the CHL Rookie of the Year and a year later, he really put on a show in the World Junior Championships. Most knew at that point that his NHL career was just over the horizon.

Having scored 9 points in his first 13 games, in the Western Conference is no easy feat. The winger has had to go up against some of the top talent in the NHL and he hasn’t been over-matched.

Ehlers left a hockey family to pursue his dream. He had to acclimate to a new country in Canada a few year’s ago and now he’s poised to be a future all-star on a very young and talented Jets squad.

Nikolaj Ehlers’ first rookie card was released in 2015-16 Upper Deck Artifacts Hockey as on of the popular Rookie Redemptions. Artifacts is an absolutely loaded set and a must for all hockey collectors. More importantly, Ehlers’ Young Guns Rookie Card debuts today with the release of 2015-16 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey. Nikolaj Ehlers is card #223 in the set.

Nikolaj Ehlers also has several pre-rookie cards in In The Game products including 2013-14 Heroes & Prospects and 2014-15 Heroes & Prospects.

Here’s a look at his first NHL goal that came at Madison Square Garden:

Ehlers fits the bill of “young star” in numerous ways. He should be a joy to watch and collect, for years to come.
