Future Watch: Pedro Avila Rookie Baseball Cards, PadresFuture Watch: Pedro Avila Rookie Baseball Cards, PadresPedro Avila was signed as an International free agent by the Washington Nationals in 2015. He pitched one game for them in the gulf coast league and he pitched four scoreless innings to start off his career.

The next season, he started with the Hagerstown Suns in A-ball. He went 7-7 with a 3.48 ERA in 20 games. He struck out 92 in 93 innings.

That winter he was traded to the San Diego Padres and things got better for him. With the Lake Elsinore Storm, he struck out 53 in 43 innings but went 1-4.

He then moved on to the Fort Wayne TinCaps where he had a 17-strikeout performance. He struck out 117 in just 85 innings with a 7-1 record and a 3.05 ERA. That is still a team record.

In 2018, he was back with the Storm, He posted a 7-9 record with a 3.59 ERA in 20 games started. He pitched in a total of 24 games. In 130 2/3 innings, he struck out 142! He also added one save and one shutout showing some real versatility.

According to his MLB.com Draft Profile:

A slightly undersized right-hander, Avila pitches with average fastball velocity, typically sitting at 91-92 mph and bumping higher at times. His plus curveball is a swing-and-miss offering, one thrown by design with varying velocities but consistent shape and action, and he also demonstrates advanced feel for a changeup that flashes above-average potential in the low 80s. He’s a consistent strike-thrower with all three pitches, albeit with slightly below-average command. Scouts expect Avila’s command to improve in the coming years because he’s a good athlete with a clean arm action and repeats his delivery well. It’s the profile of a back-end starter if it all comes together for Avila. ETA 2019.

Collectors can get his 2018 Bowman Draft autographed rookie card.

Here’s a look at him dealing:

Avila is one to watch. He gets a lot of strikeouts. Soon he’ll get a lot of notice in the hobby.
