Future Watch: Pierre Engvall Rookie Hockey Cards, Maple Leafs – Pierre Engvall was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 188th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. Were the Leafs taking a chance on the 6-4 winger or did they know what they were doing?
Engvall played in the Frolunda system from 2012-2015 developing as a junior hockey player. He got better and better every season and playing for the U20 team in 2014-15, he had 17 goals and 34 helpers in 38 games. He had six points in eight playoff games, five of them were goals. However, he wasn’t ready for the SHL just yet.
From 2015-17, he played in Allsvenskan. It’s a very competitive league full of men. He had 64 points in 111 regular season games and 11 in 14 playoff games. That earned him a promotion to the SHL in 2017-18.
Then, playing for HV71, the winger had seven goals and 13 assists in 31 games. He also got some valuable playoff experience to add to his resume, as well. Later that season the Marlies got him on loan. The talented Swede got eight points in nine playoff games. Then he got some playoff experience he will never forget. In 20 games he got eight points and was a contributor to winning a Calder Cup Championship.
In 2018-19, the Leafs did the smart thing letting him play a full season in the AHL. In 70 games, he lit the lamp 19 times with 32 points and another playoff run.
The Leafs had some injuries and called up him to the big club this November. The team was on a run that they didn’t lose a game in regulation when he had a goal. He stuck until the season was paused. He appeared in 48 games, scoring eight goals, seven assists and three game-winning goals.

Now 214 pounds, he’s everything you’d want in an NHL player. He’s 23, the average NHL age when a player makes it and starts to blossom. Collect him while he is still undervalued.
