Future Watch: Robbie Russo Rookie Hockey Cards, Coyotes – Robbie Russo was drafted by the New York Islanders 95th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the NTDP and then decided to go to college.
He played four years at Notre Dame. In 2014-15, his last season this blueliner scored 15 goals and had 41 points in 40 games. At that point, he was ready to turn pro as a free agent. He was quickly signed by the Detroit Red Wings.
In 2015-16, he played a full season for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He had 39 points in 71 games. The next year he had 32 points. That season he had seven goals.
In 2016-17, he played in 19 games for the Red Wings. He got his feet wet.
In 2018-19, he finished out the season in Grand Rapids with nine goals and 32 points. Then he was acquired by the Arizona Coyotes. Now 25, he may get a chance to play some good minutes with the big club this season.
To get ready for Arizona, Russo decided to play in the Chicago Professional Hockey League. He is a Westmont, Illinois native. This league has some talent as you’ll see in this video:
Sometimes players can get lost in the shuffle. Because Russo took four years in college he’s finally getting a lot of professional games under his belt and most players need this.
Look out for him. Sometimes players just need to get a chance and maybe he’s going to get that in 2018. The Coyotes have a young team and you can never have enough defenseman. Even if he doesn’t make the team out of camp he’ll get a shot at some point.
