Future Watch: Roland McKeown Rookie Hockey Cards, Hurricanes – Roland McKeown was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He’s a talented, offensive minded defenseman who was on a lot of teams draft boards.
In 2015, he was traded from the Kings, with a first-round pick, to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Andrej Sekera. The change of organizations was good for him. He had just finished up his third OHL serason with the Kingston Frontenacs and he was able to get a taste of AHL action with the Charlotte Checkers. He played in four games and got one assist.
The next season would be his last in Kingston. During that season he had a chance to play for Team Canada in the 2016 World Junior Championship. His season ended with him scoring 42 points in 59 games. Very solid offensive numbers.
The next season he turned pro and played a full season with the Checkers. In 71 games he had 11 points but he was playing in a men’s league and it would take time for his game to come into focus.
In 2017, he started the season with Charlotte but got called up to Carolina in November. He played in two games and had two assists. It was a great showing and that certainly lit the fuse when he was sent back down. In his first 52 games he got 19 points, five goals and was a +27. He has a good shot and that’s starting to shine through. He was recalled in January and it’s possible he could end up in Carolina by the end of the season.
You can collect his first licensed rookie card in 2017-18 Upper Deck Series 2 hockey. He has a card in the 2014-15 Upper Deck Canada Juniors set as well a few ITG sets.
Here’s a feature on him:
