Future Watch: Sabrina Ionescu Basketball Cards, New York Liberty – Sabrina Ionescu is the disciple of one of the greatest legends in the sphere of men’s basketball and she is well on her way to replicating the feat in her own realm. Certainly, the expectation that Ionescu would do so was carried by Kobe Bryant as he tutored her in the finer points of the game.
A true American Dream story, Ionescu’s Romanian parents migrated to California at the time of the 1989 revolution in their home country. Eight years later, Ionescu and her twin brother Edward were born, and while opportunities to compete against her gender were scarce growing up, games with Edward against neighborhood boys led her to develop an all-around game with rebounding and passing augmenting her natural scoring skills and cementing her as a top-flight point guard.
Ionescu’s improvement continued with a hugely successful high school career that left her as one of the most coveted college prospects in the country. Subsequently, at Oregon, Ionescu elevated the entire program in the course of a career that left her as the NCAA’s career leader in triple-doubles and a holder of the game’s most prestigious hardware (Naismith Player of the Year: 2020, Nancy Lieberman Award: 2018-2020, John R. Wooden Award: 2019-2020, Wade Trophy: 2019-20). On February 24, 2020, the very day that Ionescu helped to memorialize Kobe at his memorial service, she became the first player in NCAA history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in a career.
As the consensus top pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu was selected by one of the league’s marquee franchises, the New York Liberty. A winner of four conference titles in their first six years, but no league championships and none of either in the last 18 seasons, the Liberty’s glory years were anchored by one of the league’s greatest stars, Teresa Weatherspoon. And while Ionescu missed much of her rookie season with a severe ankle sprain, her 18.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG and 4.0 APG marked her as a strong candidate to follow in the footsteps of Weatherspoon, Bryant and the legends of both genders.
