Future Watch: Scottie Barnes Basketball Cards, Toronto Raptors – Scottie Barnes is one of the most physically-powerful forwards to enter the NBA in many years. Toronto’s fourth pick in the 2021 Draft, Barnes painted a vivid picture in college of what he can deliver presently and what he still needs to develop to achieve superstardom.
Having won state championships in his sophomore and junior years of high school, Barnes transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida for his senior season. There, he contributed to one of the greatest prep teams anywhere in recent memory. Alongside fellow top prospects Cade Cunningham and Day’Ron Sharpe, Barnes’s team was perfect through its 25 games. Each contest was won by an average of 39 points per contest.
Although COVID-19 caused cancellation of the events, Barnes qualified for the McDonald’s All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit. A consensus five-star recruit, Barnes chose to become the most recent top prospect to attend Florida State.
Allowed the chance to stretch his skills in the Seminole system, Barnes’s ball handling notched 4.1 APG, with only 2.5 TPG, offsetting the tally in his time at both forward positions. Barnes’s assist-to-turnover ratio improved to 2.8 when isolated to the half court. He also achieved 10.3 PPG, 4.0 RPG and 1.5 APG, albeit in a modest 24.8 MPG.
Defensively, Barnes enters the NBA strong, both in terms of disrupting passing lanes and his on-ball play. As with his peers among top prospects, Barnes needs to improve his shot to become a truly elite player. Interestingly, because his mid-range accuracy and outside shooting could stand to improve, his path may be smoother than some as the mechanics used to increase the percentages should work across the board.
Expected to start immediately while Pascal Siakam recovers from injury early in the season, Barnes’s level of success will dictate the number of minutes that he is able to take the power forward spot from OG Anunoby at small forward. However, the players passed over by Toronto in the fourth slot demonstrate their faith that Barnes will grow into the type of player others will have a hard time displacing from the lineup.
