Future Watch: Sean Murphy Rookie Baseball Cards, Athletics – Sean Murphy is a catcher who was selected by the Oakland A’s in the third round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft. He started off his road the big leagues at Wright State University.
In three seasons of NCAA baseball, he hit 14 home runs and had 105 RBI with a .464 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base percentage!
In 2016, after college and the draft, he played for the Vermont Lake Monsters in Short-A. He had two homers and seven RBI with a .318 on-base percentage in 22 games.
In 2017, he started in A-Ball and ended up in Double-A. While playing for the Midland RockHounds, the talented backstop hit four homers and 22 RBI, combined with his other team, he had 13 homers and 48 RBI and solid defense.
Still with Midland in 2018, he slammed 26 doubles, eight homers with 43 RBI and a .288 batting average.
According to his MLB.com Prospect Profile:
Murphy has always stood out defensively. He’s athletic and agile behind the plate, he blocks and receives well and gets high marks for his game-calling and ability to work with pitchers. He also has one of the strongest arms in the Minors, one that baserunners don’t test too often and that has thrown out 35.5 percent of potential base stealers heading into 2019. He’s a threat at the plate as well, with a short swing from the right side of the plate to go with a high contact rate. He’s not afraid to draw walks and there could be 20-homer potential in the future. Murphy will be a big leaguer based on his glovework alone, one who could be a defensive-minded starter. Add in his possible offensive production and he has the chance to be an elite-level, all-around receiver soon. ETA 2020
His first MLB hit was a homer!
