Future Watch: Sensational Sophomore Baseball Cards, National League – Most rookies in baseball struggle, and the challenges of 2020 threw off even the best of players. Most of 2020’s rookies needed experience and a strong offseason to get ready for a more normal 2021 season. Here are some that should have very successful sophomore seasons.

Jazz Chisholm is a second baseman and shortstop for the Miami Marlins. They acquired him in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks back in 2019. Chisholm has power, and that trumps a lot of things in baseball. If a team can get home run output from an infield position, especially shortstop, then they are feeling very good about their lineup. Now 23, he should be able to get double-digit home runs this season for Miami. He hit .333 in limited at-bats in the NLDS, and he only made one error playing both positions.

Dylan Carlson is a St. Louis Cardinals outfielder who was selected in the first round in 2016. This 6-2, 205-pounder  has been on the radar for some already, and last year was a little taste of what he will be able to do. Three home runs are just a start. Carlson should be able to get into double digits this year and drive in 50-60 with proper playing time. A full spring training is just what this future power hitter needs to have a leg up in 2021.

Tyler Stephenson is a Cincinnati Reds catcher who was drafted 11th overall in the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft. Catchers take a long time to develop on average, so, at 24, the current age of Stephenson is usually when they start to do their best work. He has pretty good power, but his run production and batting average have been well above average. His accurate arm also ensures that Stephenson will get time behind the plate for the Reds in 2021.

Alec Bohm is a natural third baseman who was drafted 3rd overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018. Making four errors last season wasn’t bad but, they had him work at first base too. Either way, he will play every day because he is an impact player. His power and swing have improved, and it’s showing this spring seeing him go deep four times. Bohm will hit for power, a high average, and mix in some steals. He could be the best on the list, and honestly, that’s what the Phillies are expecting.
