Future Watch: Theo Maledon Basketball Cards, Oklahoma City Thunder – Theo Maledon was born into exalted French basketball status, with his mother on the national team and his father playing in the country’s professional system. Maledon’s genes and tenacity in rounding out his game have joined to produce a more promising rookie season than most would have predicted heading into the 2020-21 campaign.
Having started in youth basketball at a very early age, Maledon rose up the ranks by advancing his game at every level. By 2018-19, Maledon had advanced all the way up to the top French league Pro A on the franchise ASVEL, a year in advance of his 18th birthday. A dream season for Maledon included the Pro A Championship and French Cup Championship (contested by pro teams at all levels in France) for ASVEL and the individual awards of Pro A Best Young Player and French Cup MVP.
Maledon’s 2019-20 season included head-turning performances in the EuroLeague. His stock was at a high point when the French season shut down due COVID-19. He then declared eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft, where Philadelphia picked Maledon with the 34th overall pick. However, he was immediately traded to an Oklahoma City franchise with an eye on the future and, consequently, opportunities available to be seized.
Still, Maledon’s minutes were slim as the Thunder surged to a hopeful, but misleading, 5-4 run through the season’s first nine games. As reality unfolded for this inexperienced squad, the lanky, 6’4’’ point guard’s opportunities expanded, initially on January 29th when six-of-six three-point shooting led him to tally 24 points, better than double his previous career high.
From there, games with more than 30 minutes tallied became a regular feature for Maledon and his double-double on February 26th with 13 points and 12 assists doubled his previous record for dimes. Maledon’s new career high of 33 points – with five-of-seven three-point shooting – on April 2nd continued to demonstrate how his respectable shooting from beyond the arc (presently .339) impacts his ability to score and create across the floor.
Oklahoma City will have an eye-popping 34 draft picks between 2021 and 2027, with high ones in the upcoming selection and most for at least the next two to three years projecting to be towards the top of each round. Reserving a key spot for the Thunder rosters of the future will be difficult given this influx, but Maledon has proven this season that his potential cannot be ignored.
