Future Watch: Top 5 Soccer Prospects of 2020: As the footballing world continues on into the new year, I want to look back at some of my favorite players that were highlighted over the past 12 months here in Future Watch.

These are not necessarily all the best players I wrote about, nor are they in order from best to worst in my list here, but they are the ones I most look forward to watching progress in the new year. Enjoy and Happy New Year!

#5 Joao Felix, Atletico MadridFelix had massive expectations going to Atletico for reportedly around $140 million. While it certainly has not been a perfect start for the 21-year old Portuguese forward, his massive talent cannot be denied. So far this season, Felix has five goals and two assists in La Liga play and has added three goals in Champions League action. His side will meet Chelsea in the round of 16 in that competition in February.

#4 Timothy Weah, LilleWeah is still trying to fully establish himself in the lineup for Ligue 1 side Lille. The 20-year old American attacker has seen limited minutes so far this season, but has tallied a goal in two of his last three league appearances. Weah’s team will take on Ajax in the Europa League round of 32.

#3 Weston McKennie, JuventusWhat a fantastic signing the young American has been for Italian power Juventus. The midfielder transferred from Schalke and looks to have fit in to new manager Andrea Pirlo’s side immediately. The 20-year old scored a goal against Barcelona in the Champions League group stage. I expect a huge World Cup from him in 2022.

#2 Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund – The Norwegian super attacker had been slowed a bit by a recent injury, but Haaland is one of the most exciting players in world football. The 20-year old striker has scored 10 goals and chipped in two assists in just eight Bundesliga games so far this season and he is tied for the lead in Champions League this campaign with six goals. He is a wonder in front of the goal and seems to always find the back of the net. Plus, Haaland has developed a real chemistry with his teammate who tops my list

#1 Gio Reyna, Borussia Dortmund – The youngest player on this list at just 18, Reyna is an attacking force from the midfield and commands attention at all times. He is electric and fun to watch play. The former NYCFC player has three goals and four assists in league play. While there is plenty of room for Reyna to continue to grow into his game, it is not a reach to say he could one day be among the two or three best players in the world.
