Future Watch: Troy Brown Jr. Rookie Basketball Cards, Wizards
The race to the Finals in the Eastern Conference will be wide open during the 2018-19 NBA season. One team looking to make a push will be the Washington Wizards. They return with most of their 2017-18 roster intact, and rookie forward Troy Brown Jr. has a solid chance to make an impact for the team this season.
Troy Brown was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and played for Centennial High School. He was rated as a five-star college recruit by Scout, Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN. In 2016, Brown played for USA Basketball at the FIBA U-17 World Championship in Spain where he helped his team win a gold medal. He committed to play college ball for the Oregon Ducks on November 7th, 2016.
In one season with the Ducks, Brown started and played in all of the team’s 35 games. He averaged 11.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. On New Year’s Eve of 2017, he set a collegiate career high in points with 21 against the University of Colorado. After his freshman season, Brown declared himself eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft.
Heading into the draft, Brown fit the prototype for a modern NBA wing. He measured 6’6.75” in shoes with a 6’10.25” wingspan and a 208-pound frame. Scouts saw him as a high-IQ player, capable of defending at the NBA level. He shot only 29% from the behind the arc at Oregon, and many evaluators stressed the need for him to develop his long-range shot at the next level. On draft night, the Washington Wizards selected Troy Brown Jr. with the 15th overall pick.
Brown played in five Summer League games for the Wizards. He averaged 30.8 minutes along with 18.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Washington’s roster has some depth heading into training camp, and Brown could start the season in the G-League. With his length and ability to defend at the next level, he has a shot to earn an early call-up or even make the opening night roster. Keep an eye on his rookie cards as the season starts. They could be a great value early on, with the ability to increase if he gets his shot.
