Future Watch: Vladimir Gutierrez Rookie Baseball Cards, Reds – Vladimir Gutierrez was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an international free agent in 2016. Since then the right-handed pitcher has been moving up the ranks in their farm system.

In 2017, he played for the Daytona Tortugas in the Florida State League which is Class A. During that time, he pitched 103 innings giving up 108 hits but only 19 walks. He had a 7-8 record with an ERA of 4.46.

In 2018, he was promoted to Double-A playing for the Southern League. He made 27 starts hurling 147 innings, yielding 139 hits and 38 walks. His 145 strikeouts were very impressive to go along with a 9-10 record and a 4.35 ERA. At the age of 23, he was progressing nicely considering he was 21 when they signed him.

Considering that Gutierrez hadn’t pitched competitively in about two years and that he was shut down in August because of fatigue, his peripherals were pretty solid. He showed he can fill up the strike zone (1.7 BB/9) and miss a fair amount of bats (8.2 K/9) at the same time. He does it with a three-pitch mix that gives him a good chance to start. His fastball touches as high as 97-98 mph, but wasn’t consistent, more frequently sitting in the low 90s in 2017. He adds and subtracts from his plus curveball without losing bite to it, throwing it for strikes at times and bouncing it as a chase pitch at others. He has feel for a changeup that should be average in time. ETA 2019.

He has a 2017 Bowman Baseball Chrome Prospects Autographs card and that’s a good way to get him into your collection.
