Future Watch: Zach Collins Rookie Basketball Cards, Trail Blazers – The NBA Playoffs are a little over a week away. Houston and Golden State have firmly secured the top two seeds in the Western Conference, while eight teams fight for the final five seeds. The Portland Trail Blazers have all but sewed up the third spot, and they’ll be a tough first-round opponent for whoever emerges as the sixth seed. This is Portland’s fifth consecutive playoff appearance, and most of their roster is playoff tested. Now they want to make a deep run. Rookie center Zach Collins is ready for his first taste of playoff action. He has a great chance to get some quality playoff minutes as he develops into Portland’s Center of the future.
The Las Vegas native had a fantastic prep career. In all four seasons at Bishop Gorman High School, Collins’ teams won the state championship every year. He would come off the bench in his first three years, and officially broke out his senior season. That year he averaged 17.3 points, 14 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 6.4 blocked shots per game. Collins would go on to be named most valuable player of Nevada’s Southwest League and Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year.
At the end of his junior year, Collins committed to play basketball for the University of Gonzaga. Rivals and 247Sports ranked him as a five-star recruit, with ESPN and Scout giving him four stars. During his freshman season, Collins appeared exclusively off the bench for the Zags behind Przmek Karnowski. In 39 games, Collins averaged 10 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. His best showcase for scouts and NBA fans came in Gonzaga’s 2017 Final Four game against South Carolina. Collins was dominant, scoring 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds and six blocks. This effort helped lead the Bulldogs to their first national championship game. Gonzaga would go on to lose to North Carolina in the final. In that game, Collins scored nine points and grabbed seven boards.
Standing seven feet tall with impressive athletic ability, scouts saw Collins as a first round talent. He was selected 10th overall by the Kings but Portland swooped in and acquired him in a draft day trade. With the move, the Trail Blazers bolstered their front court depth behind starter Jusuf Nurkic who is signed through the 2018-19 season.
So far this year, Collins has been getting steady minutes off the bench in Portland. He’s appeared in 61 games, playing 15.7 minutes per contest. His numbers aren’t eye popping, 4.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, but he isn’t being asked to carry a starter’s load. Like most front court prospects, he’ll have to add some muscle to body up most NBA big men. His athletic ability already allows him to make an impact for the Trail Blazers. He runs the court well, setting up teammates for easy lobs to him at the basket. His solid footwork and closing speed allows him to hang with sharpshooting big men. The modern NBA likes big men that can shoot the three. Collins will have to develop his long-range shot as a more consistent weapon moving forward.
There is a lot to like about Collins’ game. He’s in the perfect spot on a well-coached team that will allow him to develop at a reasonable pace. With Jusuf Nurkic possibly leaving after next season, there’s a clear path for Collins to grab the reigns as the starting center. More eyes will be on Portland during the playoffs, and Collins can provide the Blazers with quality minutes off the bench. All it takes is a few crucial plays in crunch time situations for fans to take notice. Now is the time to scoop up his rookie cards, they could become quite popular in three years.
